For three women from Israel, their time as Hamas hostages is over – relatives react with great joy. In return, Israel releases 90 Palestinian prisoners.
The Israeli ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, has described the agreement with the radical Islamic Hamas on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as a “pact with the devil”. The discussion about the release of the hostages on the one hand and Palestinian prisoners and Hamas members on the other is “difficult,” said Prosor on Monday in the ZDF “Morgenmagazin”. The ambassador pointed out that it was “not easy” to eliminate the infrastructure of the radical Islamic Hamas in the Gaza Strip and at the same time bring back the hostages.
The ceasefire is also an opportunity to see whether there are forces on the Palestinian side “who really want to live in peace with us,” said Prosor. “So far it doesn’t look like that,” he added. He hopes that the ceasefire agreement reached through mediation by the USA, Qatar and Egypt will be adhered to until the end. “I think that’s the goal for all of us,” Prosor said. With regard to the reactions to the hostage releases in Israel, he was “very, very happy” and “very proud” that Israeli society “celebrates life.”
All those, “including in Germany and Europe,” who want to see change in the Gaza Strip must think together about what a reconstruction without Hamas could look like, the ambassador warned. A massacre like that on October 7, 2023 “will not happen again,” he said.
Prosor reiterated the goal of a two-state solution to the Middle East conflict. Only those on the Palestinian side who are prepared to say “that there should actually be two states for two peoples” can enter into discussions with Israel.
