Donald Trump is now the 47th President of the United States. Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz (CDU) congratulates in a letter – and has probably made an extra effort.
If he wins the election, Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz (CDU) wants to work with future US President Donald Trump on “a new chapter” in the relationship between the two countries.
This would be one of his “priorities” if he became Chancellor, Merz wrote in English in a congratulatory letter to Trump on his inauguration. The wording was available to the AFP news agency on Monday. According to party information, Merz wrote the letter by hand.
Friedrich Merz sees Trump’s new term in office as an “opportunity”
Merz wrote that he had devoted a “significant part” of his professional career and his political life to strengthening the relationship between the two countries. He called Trump’s election victory “truly remarkable.” The US people have given Trump and his party a “strong mandate” to lead the country.
Trump was sworn in on Monday in Washington. Merz had previously said in “Bild am Sonntag”: “We should see Donald Trump’s new term in office as an opportunity to open a new chapter in European-American relations.”
