US President Donald Trump issued a decree pardoning more than 1,000 of his supporters who took part in the storming of the Capitol. These 14 had committed particularly serious crimes.

The new US President Donald Trump started his second term in office with a flood of decrees that are primarily intended to curb migration, reduce bureaucracy and reverse the course of his predecessor Joe Biden. In addition, on Monday, Trump gave a comprehensive and unconditional pardon to more than 1,000 of his supporters who were involved in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The president ordered them to be released “immediately.”

Trump shortened the prison sentences of 14 convicted members of the right-wing radical “Proud Boys” and “Oath Keepers,” who were charged with particularly serious crimes such as “seditious conspiracy.” They are now considered to have served their sentence. Some of the 13 men and one woman were sentenced to more than ten or 15 years in prison.

Trump also ordered the Justice Department to drop all other pending criminal proceedings in the case.

The new president had repeatedly promised to pardon the perpetrators of January 6th throughout the election campaign. However, those close to him, including his vice president JD Vance, had previously emphasized that no one would be pardoned if they had become violent. Trump, on the other hand, did not want to commit to details before his inauguration – and now surprised with the rigorous decision to grant everyone impunity.
