The USA is withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement again. Michael Bloomberg wants to ensure that the country still meets its obligations – as it did in Donald Trump’s first term in office.

Billionaire and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to use his money to step into the breach in view of the US’s planned withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement. The 82-year-old said his Bloomberg Philanthropies foundation, together with other American donors, will ensure that the United States still meets its obligations in the climate crisis. This includes, among other things, closing the gap in the financing of the UN Climate Secretariat UNFCCC left by the new US administration under President Donald Trump.

Bloomberg has been the United Nations climate representative since 2018. The year before, the first of Trump’s first term as US President, he co-founded the climate protection alliance “America’s Pledge”. This is a campaign by states, cities, companies and civil society organizations to ensure that the country continues to fight the climate crisis even without government support. Even back then, Trump reversed many political guidelines for climate and environmental protection. Bloomberg donated millions of dollars to the UNFCCC to compensate for reduced US government payments.

“Ready to do it again”

“From 2017 to 2020, during a period of national inaction, cities, states, businesses and the public rose to the challenge of keeping our nation’s commitments – and now we are ready to do it again,” Bloomberg said with.

The Democrat was mayor of the largest city in the USA from 2002 to 2013 and ran for his party’s candidacy in the 2020 presidential election. According to Forbes magazine, he is one of the 20 wealthiest people in the world with an estimated fortune of almost 105 billion dollars (around 100 billion euros).

On Monday, the day of his inauguration, Trump signed a letter withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement to limit global warming, which was to be sent to the United Nations. The agreement provides for a notice period of one year. Trump had already taken the USA out of the agreement during his first term in office. However, the withdrawal only lasted a few months because his successor Joe Biden recommitted to the treaty.
