Israel is supposed to withdraw its troops from Lebanon by Sunday at the latest under the ceasefire agreement. The Shiite militia Hezbollah warns of a possible extension of this deadline.
The Lebanese Hezbollah has warned of a delayed withdrawal of the Israeli army from southern Lebanon. If Israeli ground troops are not withdrawn by Sunday, it would be a breach of the ceasefire agreement, the pro-Iranian militia wrote. She responded to media reports that Israel had asked the USA to extend the deadline, which actually expired on Sunday, by 30 days. The US is one of a group of countries that is supposed to monitor compliance with the ceasefire agreed at the end of November.
Israel is talking to the new US administration under President Donald Trump about extending the withdrawal deadline because the Lebanese army is not moving in quickly enough and Hezbollah is not adhering to all agreements, Israeli media such as the Times of Israel newspaper reported the news portal “ynet”. The US government has so far been against an extension. There was initially no official confirmation in Jerusalem or Washington.
The ceasefire agreement also stipulates, among other things, that Hezbollah withdraws behind the Litani River about 30 kilometers north of the Israeli-Lebanese border. The Lebanese army is supposed to monitor compliance with the agreement and prevent the Hezbollah militia from returning.
