Friedrich Merz has had turbulent decades in top politics. Does the path lead him to the Chancellery? You can see his political stations in the photo gallery.
Friedrich Merz wants to become the new Chancellor – he would be the sixth Chancellor of the CDU in the history of the Federal Republic. As early as September, he was nominated by the CDU and CSU committees as a candidate for chancellor after Merz and CSU boss Markus Söder had previously agreed. He took the task “with great humility,” said the CDU chairman at the time. The chances for Merz are good, his party is clearly ahead in the surveys.
For the 69-year-old, the move into the Chancellery would be the highlight of his political career with many ups and downs. Merz has been in the parliamentary company since the end of the 1980s, first in the European Parliament, then in the Bundestag. In the meantime, he took a longer break in politics and worked in the economy. You can see the decisive stations of Friedrich Merz’s political career in the series of images.
