In many places, people protested against the Union’s coordination with the AfD this week. CDU boss Merz failed for the time being with a legislative proposal. But the protest wave continues.
Once again, tens of thousands have demonstrated against the joint coordination of the CDU and AfD in the Bundestag. According to the police, more than 25,000 people took to the streets in Hamburg. In Erfurt, where Union Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) held an election campaign event, according to the police, 1,400 to 1,500 people also protested.
The openness of Merz to secure a majority for its desired asylum turn with the votes of the AfD triggered a wave of outrage in the past few days. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) also spoke up with criticism. After a non-binding application from the CDU/CSU found a majority with votes from the AfD on Wednesday, a corresponding legislative project failed on Friday. The so -called influx limitation law, which Merz had presented as the Union faction leader, did not receive a majority in second reading in the Bundestag.
“We are the fire wall”
The protests against the Union and AfD continued: Flags and banners from the DIE LINKE, the GEW and GERENPECE union were seen at the demonstration in Hamburg. Many participants brought themselves painted signs with inscriptions against CDU party leader Merz and the AfD. “We are the fire wall” was to be read on a poster in allusion to the previous delimitation of the Union from the AfD.
Near the town hall, Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD), the Hamburg SPD candidate and head of the Federal Chancellery, Wolfgang Schmidt, and the president of the FC St. Pauli football club, Oke Göttlich, also ran in a chain of people.
According to the police, only around 60 people came together in front of the CDU party center in Berlin on Friday evening. Thousands of people gathered there on Thursday evening. The police estimated the number at around 6,000, the organizers spoke in a message of more than 13,000 people.
Numerous protests in the next few days
Further protests are planned for the weekend. For Sunday, the campaign organization Campact has again called for a demonstration at the Brandenburg Gate – under the motto “Uprising of the decent: We are the fire wall!”. 3,000 people are expected. A week ago, tens of thousands came to the demonstration “Sea of Lights Against the Lightshop”.
Another major demonstration is planned for Saturday in Hamburg, and the organizers expect several tens of thousands of participants. Protests are also planned in many other small and large German cities.
The Berlin police are again challenged on Monday when the CDU delegates come together for the Federal Party Congress at the exhibition center. So far, eight rallies have been planned on the day in the area, more can be added.
