Former Federal President Horst Köhler died at the age of 81. Time for a look at his person and the history of the highest political office.
This photo gallery dates from the star archive and appeared in 2022. We publish it again on the occasion of Horst Köhler’s death.
Horst Köhler died on Saturday morning after a short, serious illness at the age of 81 with his family in Berlin, said the Federal Presidential Office. From July 2004 to May 2010, Köhler was the ninth Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Steinmeier commemorates Horst Köhler
“With Horst Köhler, we lose a very valued and extremely popular person who has done great-for our country and in the world,” said Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in a condolence letter to Köhler widow Eva Luise Köhler.
Steinmeier is already the twelfth man in office. Because, so much in advance: Germany’s head of state has never been in Germany. But do you still know who the first Federal President was in the History of the FRG? Do you remember who became the first overall German head of state at the reunification in 1989? And who was the only president who did not hold at least one term? A review.
