In the United States, the execution of a man condemned to death was carried out. He denied his guilt to the end – and accused his lawyer of racism.
The 44-year-old Marion Bowman was executed in a prison in the city of Columbia in the US state of South Carolina on Friday (local time) because of the murder of his school friend Kandeee Martin in 2001, as the state’s prison authority announced. Bowman contested the crime to the end. It was the first execution in the United States this year.
Like a journalist of the journalist present in the execution “South Carolina Daily Gazette” reported, the execution began at 6:04 p.m. (local time). Accordingly, Bowmans initially went on deep breaths into flatter breaths – at 6:06 p.m. he stopped moving. A doctor entered the room at 18.26 and declared Bowman dead, the journalist reported.
The young woman Kande Martin was shot at the time. Afterwards her body was placed in the trunk of her car and the car lit. Bowman, who was 20 years old at the time of the crime, had admitted to selling Martin Drogen, but denied being involved in her killing until the end.
“I didn’t kill Martin. I am innocent of the crime for which I should die here”he said in a final explanation. However, if his death of the family of Martin gives relief, “Then he served a purpose”Bowman emphasized.
25 executions in the USA last year
The convicted African American had repeatedly appealed to delay his execution. Among other things, he threw a lawyer representing him “racist attitude” before – Kandee Martin was white.
Bowman also tried to stop his execution with reference to his weight – he weighed almost 180 kilos. Because of its weight, execution could “potentially painful” His lawyers said. A judge rejected the appeal and explained that Bowman could also choose the electric chair or a shooting squad.
There had been a total of 25 executions in the United States last year – three of which took place using the controversial nitrogen gas, all others through the death injection. Another four executions are planned for the next two weeks – two in Texas, one in Alabama and one in Florida.
In 23 of the 50 US states, the death penalty was abolished, in three other countries-California, Oregon and Pennsylvania-a moratorium applies. Three states that had suspended executions – Arizona, Ohio and Tennessee – have recently announced plans to resume. US President Donald Trump is a supporter of the death penalty.
