Former Federal President Horst Köhler enjoyed great popularity because he did not understand the office purely representative, but interfered. A look back in pictures.
Former Federal President Horst Köhler died early Saturday morning at the age of 81 after a short, serious illness, as the Federal Presidential Office in Berlin announced. He was elected head of state on May 23, 2004 and was confirmed in office five years later. On May 31, 2010, he surprisingly resigned.

Köhler was considered a very uncomfortable president because, contrary to tradition, he critically expressed himself that he had to appreciate as Federal President. But he was popular, probably because of that.
