It is vital for Ukraine that the America First President Donald Trump continues to support them. Kiev takes every chance to talk to him and his people.
Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj is ready for direct negotiations with Russia’s head of state Vladimir Putin under conditions. In addition to Ukraine and Russia, the United States and Europe should also be involved in discussions, Selenskyj told British journalist Piers Morgan in an interview – although it was unclear whether he meant the EU or individual Member States with “Europe”. Morgan is close to US President Donald Trump, and the interview was apparently serving the goal of addressing the conservative camp in the United States.
“If this is the only way to bring peace to the citizens of Ukraine and not lose people, we will definitely go to this meeting with these four participants,” said Selenskyj. He said about Kremlin boss Putin: “I won’t be nice to him, I consider him an enemy, and openly said, I think he also sees me as an enemy.”
Putin recently emphasized his alleged willingness to negotiate. However, he always points out that Selenskyj had banned conversations with him. It is about a decree of the Ukrainian head of state in September 2022, after Russia annexed the four partially occupied regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Saporischschja and Cherson.
According to the wording, the wording does not prohibit negotiations with Putin, but he declares it impossible in view of the situation. Selenskyj last said that the document was supposed to prevent possible separatism because Moscow was looking for uncontrolled discussion channels in Ukraine at the time.
Contacts between Kyiv and Washington
Trump, who boasts of his good wire to Putin, is pushing for an end to the war that has been going on for almost three years. The negotiation tactic of his new administration has not yet been clear. Selenskyj and his team have used many channels in the past few months to promote understanding of the attacked Ukraine in the Trump camp.
Selenskyj also reported to Washington on Tuesday. “Our teams – the teams of Ukraine and the United States – have already started to have concrete discussions,” he said in his evening video address. His presidential office manager Andrij Jermak spoke to US security advisor Mike Waltz. “And we are preparing a schedule for meetings,” said Selenskyj.
Initially, it could be a visit to Trump’s Ukraine Commissioned Keith Kellogg in Kiev. The latter has decided to make progress in the first 100 days after Trump’s taking office. “We finally coordinate the appointment and the participants. We are waiting for the team and will work together,” said Selenskyj to journalists in Kiev.
Selenskyj: Can pay help with mineral resources
Trump recently made help for Ukraine to access their raw materials. This met with criticism, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). Selenskyj reminded that he offered to be recognizable for western help with rare earths and other mineral resources before the US election in November.
“We are open to developing all of this with our partners who help us to defend our country and to push the enemy back with their weapons, their presence and sanction packages,” said the Ukrainian President. He spoke to Trump about it at a meeting in September 2024.
The question of nuclear weapons for Ukraine
In conversation with Morgan, Selenskyj raised the semi -rhetorically meant question about a nuclear armament of Ukraine. He asked which security guarantees get his country if the hoped-for NATO accession was to be delayed by years or decades. “Which support package, which rockets (do we get)? Or do we get nuclear missiles? Then you should be given nuclear missiles.”
In 1994, Ukraine had given the last Soviet nuclear weapons in its field in return for loose safety commitments from Moscow, London and Washington. In retrospect, Selenskyj recently described this as a mistake.
Russian fight drones in the sky
For large parts of Ukraine, the night of Wednesday started once again with air alarm because Russian combat drones were located in the sky. Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram on the eastern outskirts of the capital Kiev. Media also reported explosions in Sumy in the north and in Cherson in the south.
In the city of Isjum in eastern Ukraine, a Russian rocket attack killed at least five people on Tuesday, dozens were injured. Isjum was occupied immediately after the large -scale Russian invasion in March 2022. In September 2022, Ukrainian troops conquered the city. They had their flag on the town hall, which was now hit in the rocket attack.
