The United States releases practically all of its development aiders in a unique step. US Secretary of State Rubio is said to have only a few hundred.
According to the weekend, only a few hundred employees should be active for the US Development Aid Authority in the USA. The government of US President Donald Trump will reduce the number of employees from more than 10,000 to around 290 positions, reported the “New York Times”, citing three people with knowledge of the plans. The broadcaster NPR reported that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had been presented with a list of around 600 employees whose work is considered essential worldwide. However, Rubio exempted fewer than 300 of the exemption.
US President Trump had already freezed the funds for the authority in January during an internal review. He explained several times that USAID was led by radical “insane” who wasted the money from taxpayers. This week, the US government announced that it would release a large part of its employees from the weekend. From Friday, 11:59 p.m. (local time Washington), all employees directly employed are on leave – with the exception of employees in indispensable items and in certain programs. Those who are affected by exemptions will find out the day before, it said.
Around 10,000 people work for the authority, two thirds of them outside the USA. Last year, around $ 50 billion (EUR 48 billion) was put into development aid projects. The sudden loss of US development aid would weigh heavily. The United States is considered the largest mountain country worldwide. According to the “New York Times”, the small group of remaining employees comprises employees who specialize in health and humanitarian aid.
