In a unique step, the US government wants to exempt all its development aiders. A judge steps on the brakes – but the last word has not yet been spoken.
A judge has at least temporarily stopped the U.S.ID agency, which was ordered by US President Donald Trump, at least temporarily. He blocked the upcoming exemption of 2,200 employees, as reported, among other things, the “New York Times”. Two employee representatives had previously sued. They argue that Trump’s government is not authorized to take care of the employees. The judge emphasized that his injunction was only temporary, while the legal dispute stops.
At the beginning of the week, the US government announced that it would release a large part of its employees from the weekend. From Friday, 11:59 p.m. (local time Washington), all employees directly employed are on leave – with the exception of employees in indispensable items and in certain programs. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said according to media reports that only a few hundred employees should be excluded from the exemption.
Donald Trump wants the end of the USAID
Around 10,000 people work for the authority, two thirds of them outside the USA. Not all of them are employed directly at the USA, some employees are employed as local contractors. Trump had already freezed the funds for the authority in January during an internal review. His consultant Elon Musk had even spoken of wanting to “kill” the USA. The sudden loss of US development aid would weigh heavily. The United States is considered the largest mountain country worldwide.
