Strom shortage is part of everyday life for Russian attacks for Ukrainians. Nuclear power has long produced over 50 percent of the electricity. Kyiv plans more.
The Ukrainian parliament has launched the purchase of two nuclear reactors of Soviet design of Bulgaria. According to media reports, 261 MPs voted for the law. 226 votes would have been necessary for the majority. According to estimates, the acquisition should cost the equivalent of at least 580 million euros. Before the start of construction, however, the top rada must agree to another law presented by the government.
The aim is to complete the construction of the reactors three and four of the Chmelnyzkyj nuclear power plant in West Ukraine, which started in the 1980s. For this purpose, Bulgaria equipment of the Bulgarian nuclear power plant Belene, which was also started in the 1980s and never completed, is to be bought. The reactors have a gross performance of 1000 megawatts each. The parliament in Bulgaria has approved discussions about a possible sale.
AKW Chmelnyzkyj is to be upgraded on six reactors
With two running blocks and a gross performance of 2000 megawatts, the Chmelnyzykyj nuclear power plant is the smallest of the three Ukrainian nuclear power plants in operation. In the power plant, a fifth and a sixth reactor are also to be built in the power plant.
The Ukraine attacked by Russia almost three years ago covers over half of its electricity requirements with nuclear energy. Again and again the Russian military tries to paralyze the Ukrainian power supply through targeted attacks on power plants and the power grid. The largest nuclear power plant in Europe in the Saporischchja area has been held by Russian troops since 2022. The nuclear power plant was shut down for security reasons.
