The location in the Baltic Sea is tense, not only because of the separate submarine cable and drone overfours. The inspector of the navy sees growing dangers and arranges more pace when building it up.
Saboteurs have caused targeted damage to warships in Germany in more than one case. There is “more than one unit of destruction, that is, sabotage,” said the inspector of the navy, Jan Christian Kaack, at the “Navy Talks” in Berlin. Appropriate measures were taken in the shipyards.
Kaack was asked for a report by WDR, NDR and “Süddeutscher Zeitung”, according to which the corvette “Emden”, which was built by the Blohm+Voss shipyard, but has not yet been delivered to the Navy was a sabotage goal.
The inspector did not explicitly confirm the incident. The ship does not yet belong to the navy.
According to the report, in January at a check that several kilograms of metal shavings were tipped into the drive of the warship. Unlovered, this would have led to considerable damage. A spokesman for the Blohm+Voss shipyard told the research network when asked that there were no information.
Vice Admiral: “You test us”
Kaack said in addition to sabotage attempts on marine ships, there are cases of ingredients into marine bases and “attempts” for soldiers in uniform on their way home. “Our evaluation: You test us. You try to unsettle our society, overall and in the alliance. And you may create the basis for later active military activities,” said the Vice Admiral.
The navy has initiated measures since 2022. This includes a higher willingness of mine defense forces and one of 54 to 84 meters increased water depth of the divers – “approximately the depth in which north stream 1 and 2 passed”. The navy also sets up security companies.
“The growing threat from Russia is more urgent in early 2025 than two years ago. Experts and secret services agree that Russia from ´29 will be able to seek a conflict with NATO,” said Kaack.
He initiated a strategic expansion of existing plans (“Course Marine 2035+”). The inspector: “We have no time to lose. In the next few weeks we will initially vote internally, the measures necessary for this and then make it public. There is a lot to come.”
