After the failed coalition negotiations from FPÖ and ÖVP, the head of state is collapsing. Alexander van der Bellen wants to probe which path leads out of the dead end.
After the failure of the coalition talks by FPÖ and ÖVP, Austria’s Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen wants to explore with the parties, which leads from political dead end. To do this, he will meet with the party representatives in the next few days, said van der Bellen.
He warned the politicians to finally approach each other again. “The compromise is discredited,” said the head of state. But without this “Austrian recipe for success” it will not work. He asked the parliamentary parties to concentrate on the state of the state.
Several variants possible
As solutions from the current situation, the head of state listed several possible options: new elections in a few months, a new minority government with toleration of the parliament, or an expert government. In addition, van der Bellen did not rule out that parties could still agree on a sustainable coalition in a further attempt.
The FPÖ won the parliamentary election in autumn 2024. A first attempt to form a three-person coalition of ÖVP, Social Democratic SPÖ and liberal Neos had failed. Then the ÖVP declared two talks with the SPÖ senseless. As a consequence, Kickl was commissioned to form a government in January.
