Security conference: Selenskyj about Scholz and Merz: “These are great guys”

The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj once again recognized German help for Ukraine at the Munich Security Conference. When asked whether he hoped to deliver Taurus marching aircraft in the event of an election victory by Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz, but he did not want to answer at an international press conference. “We know each other well. He is a very good guy,” he said only about the CDU leader.

Merz had previously opened again at the security conference for the delivery of Taurus marching air bodies in the event that he would become a chancellor – but only after coordination with the European partners. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is strictly against it because he fears that Germany will be drawn too deeply into the war. Both Scholz and Merz visited Selenskyj in Kyiv only a few weeks ago.

“Olaf really helped, and Merz too”

Selenskyj said he met in Munich with both Merz and Scholz. Selenskyj did not want to answer which conversation was better. “I’ll tell you that on Monday (after the election).” The Ukrainian President expressly praised his relationship with both candidates for Chancellor. “These are great guys. Olaf really helped, and Merz too, he is always on our side. So no reviews, just thank you.”

Germany is the second largest supporter of Ukraine after the United States. Selenskyj emphasized that further help should not depend on who was on the government in the United States. There are fears that the Americans want to go back under US President Donald Trump.

German help “very pragmatic”, but not “very loud”

Selenskyj praised that Germany had always provided help very pragmatically and was “not very loud”. “There are countries that are in the ranking that are not so high, but are very loud.”
