Mr. Wallraff, how did you Gerhart Baum last experienced?
He remained active until the end. Despite illness and old age, he campaigned for civil rights and was not spared. We often believe that we live forever and that people stay in our lives for a long time, but that’s a mistake. His death is deeply dismissed by me.
She and Gerhart Baum were companions for many years. How did you get to know each other?
Gerhart Baum informed me at the beginning of his term as Federal Minister of the Interior that the protection of the constitution had illegally listened to my phone due to the absurdly constructed pretext of the “high treason” so literally. He campaigned for the Enlightenment. So a friendship was created later. And once I was able to win him to work together with Sigmar Gabriel and a federal press conference for the release of Julian Assange.
Gerhart Baum has it to one FDP-Tache made?
Love didn’t go that far. But now I think of it, once I probably chose it because of it – damn long ago – and even called for it.
He did not protect his party. And I could imagine that he wouldn’t have chosen her now.
What role did Gerhart Baum in her opinion have for his FDP?
He was the party’s social -liberal conscience. For example, he worked on the 1971 Freiburg Theses, the FDP’s basic program at the time, which also addressed environmental protection – before the Greens even existed. That was foresight. He did not protect his party. And I could imagine that he wouldn’t have chosen her now.
How will you remember it?
As a passionate exceptional politician who, as I said, did not spare himself, people in need and was always available. He was always present in my life and will stay.
