Museum chief: Merz ‘beer cover undamaged

Günther Jauch accidentally dropped a museum piece at the RTL Chancellor’s candidate Quadrell. Something like that can happen, says the director.

The historic beer cover with the control concept by Friedrich Merz, which moderator Günther Jauch dropped in the television studio, has remained undamaged. Harald Biermann, President of the House of History, has confirmed this. “The object is a robust beer lid that is undamaged and still completely intact,” said Biermann of the German Press Agency. “Mr. Jauch knew that he should only touch the beer cover on the edge if necessary, he did.” Later, however, the beer cover fell down, so that he had to pick it up.

Jauch had presented the beer cover in the TV four-way round of the four Chancellor candidates from Union, SPD, AfD and Greens. In 2003 Merz had scribbled a model for a radically simplified tax system. As a result, the beer cover gained celebrity and hiked to the museum.

Biermann said to the Malheur: “Museums are always in front of the dilemma that historical originals both want to preserve and convey through presentations.” Each presentation is a weighing decision. “The presentation in a TV show also reaches an audience that would otherwise not be seen by the historical originals, and is therefore also part of the museum’s educational mission.”

History is made by humans, and this sometimes also included unforeseen situations and breakdowns. “In the future, the beer cover will not only stand for tax policy, but also for the Bundestag election campaign 2025,” said Biermann. The House of History in Bonn has shown German history since 1945.
