Could an increase in VAT with the Union? The candidate for Chancellor does not answer that. This calls the general secretary on the plan.
CDU general secretary Carsten Linnemann made it clear after the TV duel of the Chancellor candidates that the Union does not want any tax increases. Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz had not clearly excluded an increase in VAT in “Bild” and “Welt”, but also on request, but referred to possible coalition negotiations. Linnemann, on the other hand, told the World TV station: “We are very clear. It is also in the election program that we are not increasing taxes now.”
This applies not only to VAT, but in general, emphasized Linnemann. The FDP had previously accused the Union of leaving a back door for tax increases.
Merz had repeatedly replied to the tax question in the TV duel: “I don’t want to increase VAT”. On the remarks of the moderators, he does not rule that out, said Merz: “We may also have to lead coalition negotiations.” However, he personally thinks an increase is the wrong way.
SPD Chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz clearly excluded an increase in VAT. The SPD wants to reduce the reduced VAT rate for food from seven to five percent.
