Lindner announces withdrawal from politics
The Bundestag election ended in a crash for the liberals. Christian Lindner, who has held all strings in his hand in recent years, is drawn by the consequences.
FDP chairman Christian Lindner announced the end of his political career. “Now I am out of active politics,” wrote Lindner in the evening on the platform X, after his party had increasingly moved away from the five percent hurdle in Hochmalungen from ARD and ZDF. The German Press Agency has not yet been officially resigned from the FDP tip on request. It is also important to comply with formalities that have possible consequences for the party organization.
The Bundestag election brought a defeat for the FDP, but hopefully a fresh start for Germany. I had fought for that.

Lindner had already said in the “Berlin Round” of ARD and ZDF: “If the FDP leaves the Bundestag, it is completely clear that I also leave politics.”
Lindner hoped for an alliance with the Union
Lindner had set up his party after the traffic light coalition with the SPD and Greens for a hoped-for alliance with the Union under a Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). He focused on economic growth and reduction in bureaucracy and explained that migration to Germany had to be steered in orderly railways, also by a stricter control of immigration.
The trend reversal in the approval values hoped for by the FDP failed to materialize. If the FDP remains less than five percent in the official end result, the party flies out of parliament as in 2013. At that time it had only combined 4.8 percent of the votes cast.
