Even after three years of fight against the Russian attack, the will to victory in Ukraine is unbroken. The EU and other western states help. There are new sanctions for Russia.
On the third anniversary of the Russian invasion, Ukraine received auxiliary commitments in billions of millions and emphasized its will to defend. “Europe is here to strengthen Ukraine at this crucial moment,” said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Kiev. Numerous western heads of state and government, including the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, paid tribute to the country’s struggle in the Ukrainian capital against the Russian war of aggression. The war remains the central and the most serious crisis for the future of Europe, said von der Leyen.
In view of the difficult situation in the country, the EU prefers a planned aid payment. In Kiev, Leyen announced that a further 3.5 billion euros will be transferred to the country attacked by Russia in March. The money is a loan that is repaid with interest income from the custody of frozen state wealth in Russia.
Canada, Spain, Norway, Finland and other states also assured the Ukraine, who struggles for survival, assured financial support – a total of ten billion euros, as media in Ukraine calculated.
Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin started the war on February 24, 2022 in the early morning. Including the Black Sea Peninsula Crimea, which was annexed in 2014, Russia is now checking around 20 percent of the Ukrainian area. The Russian army is still on the rise.
Selenskyj and Umjerow appreciate heroic struggle
The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj praised the country’s resistance as heroic after three years of fighting the Russian attackers. “Eternal commemoration of everyone who campaigned for the defense of our state and our people and have given their lives so that Ukraine can live,” he wrote on the platform X. In sunny weather, Selenskyj honored the tens of thousands of war with the state guests who had traveled – In front of a sea of Ukrainian flags in the center of Kiev.
Defense Minister Rustem Umjerow emphasized the country’s will to fight on the third anniversary. Ukraine has become stronger. “Ukrainian soldiers fight for every meter of our country,” he wrote on X. “The whole country works for victory.” Ukraine showed the world its strength.
“Today Ukraine is a strong shield in Europe. We have stopped an enemy that threatens the entire democratic world,” said Umjerow. He called the West to support Ukraine until the last Russian occupier left the country. “Our victory is security for the whole world.”
The fight continues, said Umjerow. “To win, we need determined actions of our allies. Only together can we restore our limits, free our prisoners and make Russia pay for his crimes.”
Von der Leyen warns of Putin
“Putin tries more than ever to win this war on the ground. His goal remains the surrender of Ukraine,” says Leyen’s speech. If Putin should succeed, according to Germany’s former Defense Minister, he could also attack other countries. “It is not just the fate of Ukraine at stake. It is the fate of Europe,” she warns.
With a view to the talks of US President Donald Trump with Putin, the text states that autocrats around the world observe exactly whether one could get away with an undoress when you violate your neighbors and international borders. Or whether there is a real deterrent. Therefore, an investment in Ukraine’s sovereignty is an investment in preventing future wars.
Kremlin: No prerequisite for dialogue with EU
Russia criticized the EU course. “The Europeans continue the path of the sanction movement – in the conviction that the war has to go on,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow. Previously, the EU had passed another sanction package to stop the Russian war of aggression that has been going on for three years – or at least make warfare for Russia more difficult and make it more expensive.
“This conviction of the Europeans is in full contrast to the mood, a way to solve the conflict to find Ukraine, as we are doing with the Americans now.” The talks with the USA will continue this week. Russia repeatedly complains that, unlike other countries, the EU has so far not attempted to solve the conflict in a diplomatic way.
Russia only wants to get involved in an armistice when Moscow is fulfilled. This includes the recognition of loss of territory by Kiev and the “mandatory categorical waiver of NATO membership,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a press conference in the Turkish capital Ankara. Lawrow met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
EU countries and London decide on new Russia sanctions
The new EU sanction package includes further trade restrictions, steps against Russian media and measures against the so-called shadow fleet. The EU wants to increase the pressure on Russia in front of the planned Ukraine talks by US President Trump and Kremlin chief Putin. Ideally, the chance of a fair agreement for an end to the war could also be increased. Russia, in turn, sees no place for the EU at the negotiating table.
The 16th sanction package now provides for a ban on shops with ports and airports in Russia, which are used to circumvent the price limit for Russian oil and other sanctions. There are also export bans for chemical preliminary products, chrome, certain machine parts or devices that can be used to control combat drones like video game controllers.
Great Britain also imposed new sanctions. The Foreign Ministry in London said that it was the largest sanction package since the first days of the war. “We have to further increase the economic pressure in order to get Putin at a point at which he is not only ready for discussions, but is ready for concessions,” said Prime Minister Keir Strander.
