Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians live in the largely destroyed coastal strip in emergency tents, while a reconstruction appears far away. A cold wave has tragic consequences.
At least three Palestinian infants, according to a clinic manager in the Gaza Strip, died of hypothermia during a cold wave. Said Saleh, head of the Asdika al-Marid hospital in Gaza, explained that the babies had died over the past few hours. The health authority controlled by the Islamist Hamas did not initially comment on it.
There has been a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip for more than a month. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have lost their home due to the more than 15 months between the Israeli army and Islamist Hamas. According to UN, their plastic film tents offer little protection against cold, storm and rain.
In the opinion of Israel, a reconstruction of the Gaza Strip can only begin when all Israeli hostages are released and that Hamas is no longer there.
The temperatures in the region are currently unusually low and fall over freezing to just a few degrees Celsius at night. Babies are particularly at risk in such situations because they cannot yet regulate their body temperature independently.
