Hamas handed over four dead Israeli hostages and thus fulfilled its promise for the first phase of the ceasefire. It is not good for the remaining living hostages.
The Islamist terrorist organization Hamas handed over the corpses of four Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip and thus observed its commitments for the first phase of the ceasefire. The Israeli government and the forum of relatives and friends of the hostages confirmed the identity of the dead.
“With deep grief we have received the news of the identification of Schlomo Manzur, Tsachi Idan, Ohad Jahalomi and Itzchak ‘Itzik’ Elgarat,” said the forum. All four were kidnapped on October 7, 2023 in the Hamas attack on Israel.
Hamas: Further release only if the ceasefire
The corpses were handed over by Hamas to representatives of the Red Cross on Thursday night. As required by the Israeli government, the handover was not staged as a macabre spectacle with armed Hamas fighters and loud music when handing over the coffins. Israel had made this a prerequisite for release.
In return for the handover of the dead hostages, around 600 Palestinian prisoners were released this time. The prisoners – including 50 with lifelong prison sentences – were originally supposed to have come to exchange for six Israeli hostages on Saturday last week. Out of anger about the degrading Hamas ceremonies in previous transfers of living and dead hostages, Israel’s government pushed a stop and temporarily suspended detention.
A total of 33 hostages released in the first phase
Hamas has released a total of 33 hostages – 25 alive and eight dead. Israel should release a total of 1904 Palestinians during the first phase of ceasefire that ends at the weekend. Of the remaining 59 Israelis in the Gaza Strip, only 27 are alive. The living should be released in a second phase. In a third phase, the handover is also provided for the dead.
The Hamas confirmed that she would only release these hostages if Israel adheres to the agreements and talks about the second phase of the ceasefire. In the course of the day, Israel will send a delegation to talks to the Egyptian capital Cairo, the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. Together with the USA and Qatar, Egypt conveys in the conflict.
