PKK announces armistice with Turkey
A few days after the call from founder Öcalan, the PKK announces a ceasefire with Turkey and makes demands for further steps.
The prohibited Kurdish workers’ party PKK has announced a ceasefire with Turkey. From today on, the PKK said, according to the news agency, which is close to it. “As long as there are no attacks on us, our forces will not carry out any armed actions.”
The PKK reacts to a call to call up its founder Abdullah Öcalan. The PKK, who had been imprisoned for years, called for the PKK to put down and dissolve the weapons on Thursday. However, the PKK made a complete implementation on conditions. For the successful implementation of the call, Öcalan must be “able to live and work under free conditions”.
The PKK has been struggling with gun violence and attacks for a Kurdish state or an autonomy area in the southeast of Türkiye since the 1980s. In the meantime, the PKK has been deployed from the request of an independent state. She has her headquarters in the Iraqi Kandil mountains. So far, tens of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict. Öcalan (75) has been on the Imrali prison island since 1999.
The last time a ceasefire was proclaimed in 2013, but the peace process failed in summer 2015. The PKK is listed in Turkey, the EU and the USA as a terrorist organization.
