Formerly liberal, now radical? So crazy is the young voter statistics

Instead of green, the youth now choose left? And instead of liberal suddenly right? star-Kolumnist Florian Schroeder is surprised at the excitement: everything is just statistics.
After this federal election, Germany is more split than ever – in old and young.
Let’s start with the old ones, also out of respect. Almost every fifth German is over 60 years old, which may explain why those we trust the departure are at least felt stone. They are recycled or otherwise rebuilt yesterday’s political.
The question is: When does Roland Koch (102) come back and when Günther Oettinger (age unknown)? Can we look forward to ten-minute Stoiber parodies on German cabaret stages soon? The fact is: the policy that is supposed to solve the demographic problem even has a demographic problem. The 90s called and want their politicians back.
And with that we are with this crazy youth. Since the Haudegen just mentioned and their followers ignore young people for years, investing as little as possible in education and schools, dazzling long -term decisions for the preservation of the climate and a future -proof infrastructure – and then they are no longer chosen by young people? Ungrateful pack! Schlawiner! Shrub thieves!
Tax only for Elon Musk
Yes, young people choose extremely. Some extremely left, the other extremely on the right. They just think of themselves: either of their wallets – the left is the only party that promises something to them: only taxes for Elon Musk. Or they maintain their hatred of all people – the AfD makes quite good offers: only party with the chainsaw.
In the last Bundestag election, the Greens and FDP were very popular with young voters, today it is the left and AfD. The easiest conclusion would probably be: If from today AfD and Left, as FDP and Greens have done the past few years, the first voters in 2029 would probably be in the “third path” and the Marxist-Leninist party in Germany.
But it will not happen that way, because between two elections there are usually three and a half to four years. To say it with the former Chancellor Karl Lagerfeld: “Youth is a rental contract that is not extended.” Four years can be a damn long time, as we have known since Merkel’s chewing gum groco years. And if you have experienced how two siblings can differ with an age difference of four years, you know that numbers are sound and smoke here.
No matter what, the main thing is radical and relentless
There is not the “Young people”, there is a certain age cohort in a certain time that makes a more or less surprising decision. And the same thing happens four years later – but then it is the next “young people” who make a more or less surprising decision. Only one thing remains: the decision that young voters make is radical and relentless, otherwise – and just otherwise – you really have to worry. In this respect, the young voters just did their job in this choice. Especially since the profits in the left and the AfD correspond exactly to the losses of the Greens and FDP in this election.
From the time of my youth, in which the political staff mentioned above already looked as old as it is today, a hit comes from the unfortunately forgotten band Fury in the Slaughterhousehe was called “Every Generation Got is Own Disease”. Each generation has its own illness. And this is particularly true for the 18-24-year-olds today.
A troop that grew up with a fleeing crisis in 2015, with Corona, the Ukraine war and street rap from Capital Bra on the top of the charts. This is a situation that justifies nothing but explains some things. If the present seems without alternative, then as a reasonably attentive person, you stretch out the sensors for these alternatives. Whether we like this to Best Agern or not.
A problem that is overlooked: the cohort effect
Why are these numbers not particularly meaningful? In addition, a brief look at the statistics that are drowned out as dry. There is the problem that this is about, cohort effect. In the election results, only those who are 18 years old are taken into account. Anyone who was eighteen in 2015 had a different youth with different challenges and opportunities than someone who was so old in 2025.
In order to really make a statement about the election behavior of a certain cohort, you would have to watch it for many years, even decades. The singular shouting about what certain vintages choose at a moment, says nothing. Neither about the voters, nor about their future and very much about the state of the country.
I, as the 1990s Teenia, was allowed to vote for the first time in 1998. I grew up in the decade of Fury in the Slaughterhouse. In the decade of Tamagotchi and ass antlers, Baywatch and Al Bundy ran on television. It is also a little miracle that I would become a democrat again.
