A new state parliament is elected in the Hanseatic city. The SPD is clearly in the favorite role, but must have springs. CDU and Greens have also set up mayor candidates.

Almost 1.3 million Hamburgers are called for a new citizen on Sunday. The polling stations are open between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

A week after the Bundestag election, the performance of the SPD, which is ruling in Hamburg, is particularly persecuted. The final surveys also saw a narrow majority for red-green under Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD). The election in Hamburg is the only regular state election in Germany this year.

The citizens are the state parliament of the city of Hamburg and thus comparable to the state parliament in other federal states. All Hamburgers with German citizenship from the age of 16 are entitled to vote.

Each voter can hand over up to ten votes-five each on the state list ballot and the constituency list selection list. In total, at least 121 seats are to be awarded in the state parliament.

A almost third of those entitled to vote could have already voted. According to the state election office, more than 420,000 postal voting documents were issued by Friday – that was significantly more than five years ago.

Three parties want to provide mayors

In the 2020 citizens’ election, the SPD and Greens came together to two thirds of the seats. The Social Democrats received 39 percent, the Greens came to 24 percent of the votes.

Both parties want to continue the coalition after the election. SPD top candidate Tschentscher expressed the hope that the SPD could buy and thus claim further Senate posts. This critically critically assessed the top candidate of the Greens, science senator Katharina Fegebank.

The CDU had reached its historical worst result with 11.2 percent in 2020. In the past few months, however, it has increased significantly in voting in surveys.

CDU state and parliamentary group leader Dennis Thering goes into the race as a top candidate. He excluded a coalition with the Greens, the Left and the AfD and hopes for working with the SPD.

SPD leads in surveys – CDU and LINKE win this

The mood in Hamburg deviates significantly from the national trend. According to a current survey by the research group elections on behalf of the ZDF, the SPD and Greens would have to expect significant losses, but their coalition could continue.

Accordingly, five parties would be represented in the new citizens: the SPD would come to 33 percent, the CDU to 18 and the Greens to 17 percent. The left would increase to 12 percent, the AfD would be 9 percent.

Election surveys are generally affected with uncertainties, they only reflect the opinion at the time of the survey and are therefore not forecasts on the election outcome.
