Warning strike in clinics and nursing homes on Thursday

The collective bargaining dispute for 2.5 million employees in the public service at the federal government and municipalities goes into the hot phase. The sick and those in need of care should now be felt.

In clinics, rescue centers and nursing homes of the municipalities and the federal government, the sick and those in need of care must prepare for restrictions on Thursday. The Verdi union calls up the employees of these institutions nationwide for a warning strike day to build pressure in the tariff dispute with the federal government and municipalities. However, emergency services are possible, said a union spokesman. He did not say how long how long is going on.

The next round of negotiations is planned for mid -March in Potsdam. There was no approach in mid -February. Negotiations are being made for a total of 2.5 million employees in the public service. Numerous professional groups are included, including educators, nurses, bus drivers or firefighters.

“What the employees do for society every day in hospitals and care facilities, psychiatric and emergency services is aware of most people in this country,” said Verdi federal board member Sylvia Bühler. But the employers missed this recognition, added them.

She referred to the fact that the employers of the federal government and municipalities had not submitted a offer in the second round of collective bargaining in mid -February. “The request of the employer to agree on a low or no wage increase, and in addition to a long term of 36 months, is a provocation,” said the trade unionist.

Demand for more money and more free time

Verdi calls for a tariff increase in a volume of eight percent, but at least 350 euros more per month for increases in fees and higher surcharges for work on stressful and unfavorable times. The training allowances and internship fees are to be raised by 200 euros per month. The union also demands three additional days off.

Employers have rejected these claims as unavailable. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) is sitting at the table for the federal government. She had promised serious negotiations in the past round to find an appropriate solution. A spokesman for Faeser’s Ministry did not want to comment on the announced warning strikes.

Municipal households tense

The Mayor of Gelsenkirchen Karin Welge (SPD) negotiates for the municipalities. She is President of the Association of Municipal Employers’ Associations (VKA). She had admitted that more free time for the employees would put a strain on the facilities. At the time, she justified that the unions had made a lot of individual claims and whose costs were not yet to be quantified.

Many municipalities complain about lack of money. According to a survey of the city day among 100 major cities, 37 percent of cities can no longer present a balanced budget. Another 47 percent only managed a balanced budget by falling back on financial reserves.

DBB: “In this state there is money for all money”

The negotiator of the DBB civil servant association and tariff union, Volker Geyer, said at a rally by his union in front of the headquarters of the Federal Intelligent Department in Berlin: “The fact that employers are always saying that there is no money there is nothing new.”

The state took almost a trillion euros in taxes last year. “There is money for all the money in this state, there must also be money for the public service employees, because you keep this state running every day,” said Geyer in front of demonstrators. Without better remuneration, young people are also missing for the public service.

The collective bargaining will continue in Potsdam from March 14 to 16, 2025.
