Migrants from Turkey continue to get to Greece. In order to finally curb illegal border crossings, the country wants to build a wall for EU neighbor.
To prevent illegal entry into the EU, Turkey wants to build a wall on the border with Greece. It is planned to build 8.5 kilometers of wall this year, said the governor of the Turkish province of Edirne, Yunus Sezer, on Tuesday. The province borders on the EU member states of Greece and Bulgaria.
Further sections of the wall along the approximately 200 km long land border between Turkey and Greece should be built later, Sezer said.
The escape route over Turkey continues to exist
In 2016, an agreement between Turkey and the EU was signed to significantly reduce the number of refugees who come to the EU via Turkey. Migrants still try to get to Greece from Turkey, mainly through the sea route. People keep living.
In recent years, Turkey has built walls with a total length of more than a thousand kilometers along its borders to Iran and Syria. This is to prevent illegal border crossings.
