Friedrich Merz had a U -turn in terms of public debt after the election. According to a survey, the majority of citizens resent him with this.
The Union and SPD have already agreed on historical in the exploratory negotiations: the debt brake should be relaxed for defense spending, and there should also be a special fund of 500 billion euros for infrastructure.
All of this means that the German debt mountain is growing-and that was exactly what CDU Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz strictly rejected in the election campaign. Just a week and a half after the election that CDU/CSU won, he acts counteracts his promise. This is not well received by the majority of citizens.
CDU supporters are mild to Friedrich Merz
According to a new Forsa survey, a narrow majority of citizens believe that Merz had deceived his voters. 55 percent answered a corresponding question with yes. 37 percent, on the other hand, do not believe that. Merz gets away well with his own followers. Only 18 percent of the CDU supporters feel deceived by their candidate for chancellor and party leader. In contrast, 61 percent of the SPD supporters and 72 percent of the Merz voters surveyed to the Greens accuse the Greens.

At the latest according to the recent decisions by the US government, the additional expenditure for defense "no postponement" tolerated, Merz had justified his turnaround. Germany will only cope with the high investments for defense if the economy also returns to growth course, said the CDU boss. The 500 billion euro special assets serve.
However, a change in the Basic Law in the Bundestag is necessary - and this requires the Union and SPD the votes of the Greens or the FDP. The trouble is big in both camps. Greens boss Felix Banaszak accused Merz of "lying to power". In the election campaign, it was the Greens and the SPD that had advertised the loosening of the debt brake. The FDP continues to categorically reject additional debts.
The data was made by the market and opinion research institute Forsa for the star and RTL Germany on March 5th. Database: 1019 respondents. Statistical fault tolerance: +/- 3 percentage points. This means that the survey is representative.
