Elon Musk wants to open up Mars with the largest missile system in history. Now another test did not run as desired – with far -reaching consequences.
Another setback for the “Starship” by Elon Musk: The upper part of the SpaceX spacecraft exploded on Thursday (local time) minutes after the start. The so -called “upper level” came out of control in space. Several videos on social media show fiery, falling rocket parts that illuminate the sky at dusk over the US state of Florida and Caribbean.
The largest rocket system in space history ever built has not been able to complete a eighth test flight as planned. “During the rise of ‘Starship’, the vehicle suffered a rapid, unplanned disassembly and the contact was lost,” said the SpaceX space company.

“We will analyze the data of today’s flight to better understand the cause. As always, the success of such a test is what we learn, and today’s flight will help us to improve the reliability of the ‘Starship’.”
The US flight inspectorate FAA temporarily stopped starts and landings at several airports in Florida. The previous test flight of the “Starship” ended similarly, at that time there had been reports on falling rocket parts on the Turks and Caicos Caribbean island group.
Cutting the lower rocket level with arms of gripping
After all, this test flight and now for the third time to catch the lower rocket level at the starting tower in the US state of Texas with griffin arms. Previously, the test flight had been postponed in the past few days and canceled at short notice.
The rocket system was tested for the first time in April 2023 – and at that time completely exploded after a few minutes. In further tests, however, the upper level had already reached this and had also landed in the Indian Ocean.
Elon Musks “Starship” is larger than the Statue of Liberty
The “Starship” consists of two parts that separate after the start: the approximately 70 -meter -long “Super Heavy” booster and the upper level, which is also called “Starship”, which measures around 50 meters. Overall, the system is larger than the Statue of Liberty. Both parts, both the booster and the spaceship, are designed in such a way that they can be reused after returning to earth. The US room trip authority NASA wants to send astronauts to the moon with the “Starship”, while SpaceX pursues the goal of reaching Mars one day.
