The conflict between the AfD and the protection of the constitution goes into the next round: In Thuringia, the secured right-wing extremist state association now uses a U-committee.
In the Thuringian state parliament, the AfD only uses an investigation committee on the work of the domestic secret service. The focus should be on the acting of state constitutional protection president Stephan Kramer, as can be seen from the AfD application, which was decided in parliament. For example, the committee should clarify whether Kramer abused his office for political purposes. AfD MP Stefan Möller said that the committee of inquiry is used to illuminate “the machinations” by Kramer and Thuringia’s Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD).
AfD became the strongest force in Thuringia in 2024
In the state parliament election in autumn 2024, the AfD with its Thuringian boss Björn Höcke became the strongest strength and now has so many seats in the state parliament that it can use committees of investigation alone. The other factions cannot prevent this. Since March 2021, the Höcke-AfD has been classified and observed by the Thuringian constitutional protection as secure right-wing extremist.
“We will use this committee of inquiry to clarify the danger and risk of the AfD,” announced the Thuringian left-wing member Katharina König-Preuss.
