The Ukrainian government accuses the Russian invaders of kidnapping thousands of children from the occupied areas – this is why the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in March 2023. Communication to exchange prisoners is practically the only channel of conversation that still works between Kiev and Moscow. Both warring parties have already exchanged thousands of prisoners in several actions. How many prisoners are currently still on both sides is unclear.

“Constructive” position of Ukraine announced

In the Saudi Arabian port city of Dschidda, representatives of the United States and Ukraine want to talk about opportunities to terminate the war. According to his own information, Selenskyj will not personally participate. The Ukrainian delegation consists, among other things, of its Chancellor Andrij Jermak and Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha, the US delegation is headed by Foreign Minister Marco Rubio.

Selenskyj emphasized that he hoped for practical results. “The Ukrainian position in these conversations will be very constructive,” he announced.

The Ukrainian head of state praised the support of the Saudi crown prince for his country: “It was particularly important to hear words of trust in the future of Ukraine.” Saudi Arabia offers an important platform for diplomacy, “and we appreciate this”. An essential part of the discussion with the crown prince was devoted to possible security guarantees. A common vision for economic development, especially with regard to the reconstruction of Ukraine, is shared, said Selenskyj.

Ukraine has been defending itself with western support against Russia’s invasion for more than three years. US President Donald Trump wants to force a quick end to the war.
