Chief of the left to reform the debt brake in the old Bundestag

Left-wing boss Jan van Aken has signaled the willingness of his party to reform the debt brake in the old Bundestag. “The debt brake has to go! “If the Union and SPD only want to reform the debt brake in parts, it depends very much on the detail.”

Van Aken emphasized that his party “would be a general reform” of the debt brake “and none that only creates exceptions for individual investment areas”. “We need improvements for the majority, no mogue pack,” he said.

In this context, van Aken evaluated the rejection of the Greens as a “tactical train”. “You will probably negotiate a few concessions now and then agree,” he said.

The Bundestag is scheduled to advise on Thursday in the first reading on the financial plans of the Union and the SPD. Among other things, these provide for far -reaching exceptions from the debt brake for defense. In addition, the debt brake for the countries is to be relaxed. The old Bundestag is said to vote on this, since in the Union, SPD and Greens, which was newly elected on February 23, no longer have the required two -thirds majority. Then the left faction would also be necessary – or the AfD, which the other parties exclude.

However, the Greens said that the constitutional changes planned by the Union and the SPD did not want to support their financial package in the Bundestag. You would only be ready for a separate decision to strengthen defense ability, but not under the current requirements for the planned special fund for infrastructure. Union and SPD wanted to look for a conversation with the Greens on Monday.
