Bundestag live in the ticker: Parties decide on the financial package

Klingbeil’s first coup?

Lars Klingbeil makes it clear: “The SPD faction is behind the package.” The SPD’s party and parliamentary group leader predicts a “very, very great consent” in the evening parliamentary group meeting of the Social Democrats for the upcoming billions with CDU/CSU and the Greens.

A comrade will be missing from the vote due to illness, says Klingbeil-in fact this means a “no” voice. There is also an actual “no” voice from the SPD parliamentary group. “Stand now,” says Klingbeil on Monday evening. Talks would still be held with the goal “that we will get even better there”. So the “no” should become a “yes”. On Tuesday morning, the SPD faction will meet for another session. Count through one last time.

After the disaster in the Bundestag election, a two-thirds majority for the financial package would be a veritable success for the SPD-and for Klingbeil. A special pot for investments in the infrastructure, a (first) reform of the debt brake for defense spending: the SPD has already requested this in the election campaign.

A success of the coordination on Tuesday should let the comrades go again with somewhat wider cross, one could demonstrate that after the electoral player you can still move weights-even as a expected junior partner in a black and red government. For party leader Klingbeil, who was elected to the SPD parliamentary group leader almost three weeks ago with an “honest” but not outstanding result, this would be a success. In addition, a closed vote of the faction would also strengthen his back.

And if it doesn’t work? In the SPD you wave off: the Union has to close its ranks and ensure a stable majority – after all, Merz wants to become a chancellor. The biggest uncertainty factor currently seems to be in the Union faction, although the number of potential deviators has so far been manageable, and there are currently no major surprises in the Greens.
