Russia’s war of attack: Limited ceasefire in the Ukraine War moves closer

In the Ukraine War, a partially ceasefire is closer – but initially limited to mutual attacks on energy systems. After Russia, Ukraine also agreed to stop at the energy infrastructure of the other side. This was announced by the Ukrainian head of state Wolodymyr Selenskyj on the platform X after a phone call to US President Donald Trump. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin had committed himself to such a partial fire break the day before in a conversation with Trump. When exactly this should begin remained unclear.

If the agreement is implemented, it would be the first limitation of the fights after more than three years of Putin’s war of attack on the neighboring country. Trump surprisingly suggested that the United States should take over the Ukrainian nuclear power plants as a security guarantee for Ukraine. Before the phone call with Trump, Selenskyj had called for the United States to take over these partial arms.

Ukrainian drones met Russian refineries

Russia has damaged Ukraine’s energy production with targeted rocket and drone fire. Several power plants were switched off. The Ukrainian population has to suffer from the failure of electricity, heating and water. A feared breakdown of the system also failed to materialize in the third winter of war, which is now coming to an end.

For its part, Ukraine tried to disturb the Russian oil industry with drone attacks. Large refineries were hit. Ukraine hoped to reduce the fuel supplement for the Russian army. Moscow should have fewer income from the oil business for his war treasury. For the Kremlin, these attacks meant a growing problem.

Stopping the attacks on energy systems was the tangible result of Trump’s phone call with Putin from Tuesday. The Kremlin chief has so far rejected a hiring of all fights limited to 30 days, as suggested by Trump.

In the coming days, however, the United States wants to negotiate with representatives of the Ukrainian and the Russian government in the Middle East about an expansion of the initially very limited break. The goal is a general ceasefire in the war, emphasized the US side. In which format the negotiations should take place is unclear.

USA want to take over nuclear power plants for protection

Trump’s push for the nuclear power plants came as a surprise. In a statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s national security advisor, Mike Waltz, it said that the US President also spoke to his Ukrainian counterpart about the power supply and nuclear power plants in Ukraine. “He said that the United States could be very helpful when operating these systems with their specialist knowledge in the areas of electricity and energy supply.” It would be the best protection for these systems and the Ukrainian energy infrastructure as a whole if these power plants were owned by the United States, the US government argued. At first, Kyiv did not comment on this.

Selenskyj does not respond to nuclear power

The nuclear power plants used by Trump have so far been the backbone of Ukrainian electricity production because many coal -fired power plants are damaged. The Kiev leadership also decided to build other reactors. Selenskyj did not respond to Trump’s initiation in his message for the conversation. A special problem with the nuclear power plant is that the largest system in Ukraine, the nuclear power plant Saporischschja, is Russian.

Trump’s proposal follows the logic of the planned agreement on the joint exploitation of rare raw materials in Ukraine. In this case too, US engagement should serve as an economic security guarantee for Ukraine. However, the agreement was not signed after a scandal in the White House when Trump publicly caught Selenskyj. The US government no longer seems to be pursuing the raw material agreement.
