Despite a ban, thousands of people came together in Istanbul alone in front of the city administration under a high police force, as a DPA reporter reported on site. There was also protests in Ankara, according to the broadcaster. At the Odtü University there, there were clashes between students and the police. Demonstrators are also said to have been custody.
Imamoglu was arrested in the morning – a few days before his election planned for Sunday as the presidential candidate of the largest Turkish opposition party Chp. He is considered a promising challenger of the authoritarian president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in upcoming elections. Imamoglus party speaks of a “civil coup” with which Erdogan’s government wants to eliminate a political opponent and called on nationwide protests.
