Social security numbers, medical records, bank details: Elon Musk uses very personal information under the pretext of modernization. A judge blocks the project.
A US judge in Baltimore has temporarily banned Tech billionaire Elon Musk and his cost reduction committee Doge to access sensitive data from the social security authority. Under flimsy suggestions, the committee received “unrestricted access” for “personal and private information from millions of Americans”, judge Ellen Lipton Hollander justified her injunction. It is about social security numbers, medical records, driver’s license data, banking and credit card information as well as tax documents.
Basis “Hardly more than a suspicion”
According to the judge, the allegations of a “fraud epidemic” made by Musk and his team were “little more than a suspicion”. The research of the committee was like to find “the proverbial needle in the haystack” – without knowing whether the needle is at all.
The injunction prohibits Musk, who appointed Doge boss Amy Gleason and other Doge employees, access to personal data and obliges you to delete already received, not anonymized information. In addition, you are not allowed to install software in the authority, change IT systems or view code. However, the committee can receive anonymized data under certain conditions – provided that the responsible employees previously complete the required safety training.
“Try to slain flying with a default hammer”
Trump wants to massively shorten the government spending and has commissioned Musk to implement it. The billionaire drives the conversion of the state apparatus with the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) connected to the White House. The US President is said to have granted him far-reaching but legally questionable powers. Doge and Musks role are now in focus in the focus of several complaints. As the head of Tesla, SpaceX and X, the estimated man in the world has significant economic interests.
Judge Hollander accused the Trump government of not even trying to explain why a moderate procedure could not be as effective. Instead, the mantra of system modernization and fighting fraud is repeated like prayer mill. However, this approach is the same, according to the judge, “the attempt to kill a fly with a shelter”.
