The Federal Government has significantly criticized the arrest of Ekrem Imamoğlu. Government spokesman Hebestreit speaks of clear demands to Turkey.
The Federal Government criticized the detention and provisional dismissal of the Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoğlu as “absolutely unacceptable”. “This has to be informed very quickly and very transparently,” said government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit in Berlin.
The latest developments are “a bad sign of democracy in Turkey”, but also for the further development of German-Turkish relations. The Federal Government’s attitude was informed of the Turkish ambassador in a conversation in the Federal Foreign Office.

İmamoğlu is considered the most promising challenger of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the choice scheduled for 2028. He was arrested on Wednesday in connection with corruption and terrorist investigation, was transferred to custody on Sunday due to allegations of corruption and suspended by his office.
Erdogan challenger İmamoğlu rejects allegations
İmamoğlu denies all allegations and accuses the government of wanting to want it as political rival cold stations. Since the arrest, there have been nationwide protests – now the fifth day in a row.
The Federal Government has not yet considered concrete consequences for detention, such as the stop of arms exports to Turkey. First of all, they want to wait and see how the Turkish government reacted to the demand for education, said Hebestreit. “Then you may have to ask yourself further questions.”
