The EU Parliament raises immunity from AfD politician Bystron

Because of a contribution on a social network, the European Parliament takes up the immunity of an AfD MP. It is not the only investigation against the man.

The European Parliament clears the way for further investigations against AfD politician Petr Bystron. A majority of MPs voted in Strasbourg to raise Bystrone’s immunity. The background to the Munich I public prosecutor’s office is due to a presumably criminal contribution on a social network.

As can be seen from a report by the legal committee of parliament, the contribution of politicians – including members of the executive federal government – have shown how they raise the right arm in different situations. According to the public prosecutor, a objective user creates the impression of the collage, the politicians showed the Hitler salute. Bystron is accused of at least tacitly accepted and the license plates of unconstitutional organizations.

Bystron criticizes investigations

Because of the investigation, the Bundestag, to which Bystron belonged at the time, had already lifted its immunity in 2023. Since the AfD politician is now a member of the MEP, the criminal proceedings against him had been temporarily suspended, since the EU Parliament also had to overturn its immunity.

The photo has bothered anyone for over a year, said Bystron on request. “It was only with an upcoming EU election campaign that the public prosecutor’s office discovered a Hitler salute and staged a procedure against me in the media,” he said.

Further investigations into suspected bribes

There are other allegations against Bystron. In the course of money laundering and bribery investigations, it was also requested to remove the politician’s immunity. The parliamentarian is suspected of receiving money in connection with the pro -Russian portal “Voice of Europe” in order to act in the Bundestag in return in the interests of Russia.

Bystron himself has always rejected the allegations against him and described the procedure as politically motivated. The presumption of innocence applies until the final end of the procedure. It is not clear when the parliament decides on the abolition of immunity in this case.
