El Salvador recently recorded some Venezuelan deportation from the United States – against money. The country’s president wants to expand the cooperation. Donald Trump is taken with the idea.
US President Donald Trump is considering relocating prisoners with American citizenship in adhesion to El Salvador. When asked about a corresponding offer by the Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele, Trump said Trump on a return flight from the state of Florida to the US capital Washington: “If you can accommodate these terrible criminals for much less money than it costs us.” But Trump emphasized: “I first have to see what the law says.” He will do nothing that violates the law.
In the past few weeks, the US government had started to transfer hundreds of alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador, where they were housed in a huge prison. According to Bukeles, Washington pays an annual fee of $ 20,000 (around 18,500 euros) to the Latin American country for every prisoner recorded.
Outsource part of the US prison system?
Bukele recently offered to accommodate American violent criminals in a prison in El Salvador. “We offered the United States the opportunity to outsource part of their prison system,” said Bukele about the platform X. El Salvador is ready to also include convicts of a fee to her mega prison “Cecot” (Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo). “The fee would be relatively low for the United States, but significant for us, so that our entire prison system would be sustainable,” he argued.
Human rights organizations have long accused Bukele that there are arbitrary arrests and massive fundamental rights violations under his leadership. The conditions in prison rate them as intolerable.
Trump nevertheless commented on the idea. There are some “terrible criminals” who were born and grew up in the United States. “If we could get El Salvador or anyone to record them, I would be very happy about it.” However, this must first be checked legally.
