Russia raises demands on large parts of the raw -rich Arctic. To support his demands, Moscow once again demonstrates military strength.
Russia’s north -sea fleet has started a military maneuver in the Arctic. According to the Fleottenkommando of the Russian news agency Interfax, 20 ships and around 1,500 soldiers are involved in the exercise. “In the maneuver, the military leadership of the northern sea fleet trains the control of forces and units to protect sea decommunications and the defense of objects of military and civil infrastructure in Russia in the Arctic,” says the press release cited.
It is therefore a planned maneuver. The length of the military exercise, which is under the leadership of the North Sea fleet manager Konstantin Kabanzow, was vague with a few days.
Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin has classified the Arctic as a strategically important region for Russia. Finally, he complained that NATO wanted to make the region a bridge head for possible conflicts. Russia cannot be driven out of the Arctic, he said.
