US President Trump wants to reach an end to the Ukraine War. While his special envoy is for a special meeting in Russia, he puts Moscow under pressure again.
The US specialist Steve Witkoff talks about the Ukraine War in St. Petersburg with the Russian President Vladimir Putin. The meeting started, the Kremlin press service said in the late afternoon.
A time limitation was not planned, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskow had previously said. “An hour, two, three, four, if necessary. Needs as much time as President Putin,” he said about the possible length of the conversation. The dialogue about a peace regulation in Ukraine continues.
U.S. President Donald Trump once again put Moscow under pressure after Witkoff’s arrival. He wrote on the Truth Social platform: “Russia has to move. Too many people die, thousands a week, in a terrible and senseless war.”
Before reception at Putin, Witkoff had already met Kremlin negotiator Kirill Dmitrijew. Dmitrijew was talks in Washington at the beginning of the month. Witkoff had already traveled to Russia in March and February, and he also spoke to Putin.
Trump urges the Ukraine War to end
According to media reports, the US President had been annoyed by Putin at the end of March and said that he was “pissed off”. At the NATO Foreign Ministers’ meeting, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently made it clear that Trump will not accept the Russian president’s stem tactics for long.
If there is no fire break by the end of the month, Trump could impose additional sanctions against Russia, the US news page “Axios” reported with reference to an anonymous source.
Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion with western help for more than three years. Most recently, the United States tried to convey a 30-day ceasefire during negotiations. While Kyiv agreed to the proposal, Putin put priority for such a break.
