Machmud Chalil’s case has been attracting great attention in the USA for weeks. Does the US government want to put an example on him? In any case, Trump’s team had a success in court.
A court allowed the propalestinian activist Machmud Chalil from the United States to be deported. A judge in the state of Louisiana considered the justification of the US government to be sufficient for the controversial deportation plans, as several US media reported in the hearing in the city of Jena.
In this case, the US government relies on a rarely used regulation that allows the Foreign Minister to initiate deportation proceedings against people if their presence is considered a threat to the US foreign policy interests.
Chalil’s lawyers immediately announced that the judge decided.
Chalil was arrested in his house in New York in March and a prison was brought to Louisiana from there. According to its lawyers, the graduate of the New York Columbia University has a GreenCard and thus an unlimited residence permit in the USA. He is married to a US citizen and will soon become a father.
The Palestinian university activist who was born in Syria had played a prominent role in the propalestinian protests at the Columbia University. Among other things, the US government accuses him of representing anti-Semitic views and positions of the Islamist Hamas and organizing protest groups. These had disturbed the university company and molested Jewish students.
Chalil’s lawyers deny this. The activist is not charged with a crime.
His case has been causing a sensation in the United States for weeks. It was the first publicly known arrest of a propalestinian activist in the term of office of US President Donald Trump. Since then, others have followed.
Critics are alarmed. They fear that the US government wants to create a precedent with vague accusations in order to silence unpleasant critics.
The “New York Times” quoted one of the lawyers Chalils after hearing with the words: “If Machmud can be targeted in this way just because it works for the Palestinians and exercises its constitutional right to freedom of expression, this can happen to anyone – on any topic that the Trump government dislikes.”
