In order to protect pasture animals, wolves should be able to be shot more easily. Hunters and forest owners see politics on the right track.
Forest owners, farmers and hunters support the plans of the Union and SPD to include the wolf in Germany in hunting law. For protection, for example, the stocks should be kept small for example by sheep and goats.
“It is high time to regulate the wolf population in Germany by hunting, as the coalition is now planning,” said Max von Elverfeldt, President of the Family Business Land and Forest Association, the “Bild”. In 2023, wolves in Germany had injured or killed more than 5,700 farm animals, including almost 5,000 sheep. The result is considerable economic damage to farmers. “And it unsettles the citizens,” emphasizes von Elverfeldt.
The President of the German Hunting Association, Helmut Dammann-Tamke, told the “Bild”: “We are at the side of the livestock owners who have been demanding active herd protection for years.”
The Union and SPD agreed in the coalition agreement to “immediately” include the wolf in the law. They also want to implement a proposal from the EU Commission for a sharper approach. The wolf’s protection status would thus be reduced from strictly protected to protected.
