SPD vote on the coalition agreement has started

The party leaders agree on the formation of a black and red government. At the SPD, however, the members have the last word in the next two weeks.

The coordination of the SPD members about the coalition agreement with the Union has started. As planned, the online platform was unlocked at 8:00 a.m., on which the 358,000 social democrats can submit their voices by April 29 at 11:59 p.m., as a party spokesman said. The result is to be announced on April 30th.

For the acceptance of the 144 -page coalition agreement entitled “Responsibility for Germany”, not only a majority of the votes is required, but also a participation of at least 20 percent of the members in purely digital vote. The members received a password by post with which they can – in combination with their membership number – be encrypted online. If you have no internet access, you can choose in an SPD office.

The CDU also has to agree

So far, only the CSU has accepted the coalition agreement by board decision. The CDU’s approval is still missing. The party of the designated Chancellor Friedrich Merz will decide on April 28 at a small party congress. If everything runs smoothly, the CDU boss should be elected chancellor in the Bundestag on May 6th.

With the minimum wage of 15 euros and tax reduction for low and medium -sized incomes, the SPD has anchored some of its campaign promises in the coalition agreement. However, the planned tightening of migration and social policy are controversial. The contract is therefore rejected the management of the Jusos and calls for renegotiations. The party youth provides about twelve percent of the SPD members.

Klingbeil considers new negotiations to be pure theory

Klingbeil made it clear on Monday evening at a kick-off conference on the membership decision in Hanover that he considers renewal negotiations only as a theoretical opportunity. “If that fails, there will be new elections, or then there may be a minority government.” There is also a risk that the call for normalizing the relationship to the AfD will become louder in the Union.

In addition to the concrete content, the membership decision is also about the fact that a stable government of the middle is at all, said Klingbeil. “A rejecting of the coalition agreement will not lead to renegotiations, but will lead to the fact that the voices in the Union will become stronger or feel strengthened, who say that there are still alternatives to the sizis, they are too exhausting for us.”

The AfD is the only party with which the Union in addition to the SPD in the Bundestag would have a majority for government formation. However, the Union categorically excluded an alliance with the right wing party.

Esken expects “good approval”

Party leader Saskia Esken told the dpa that she too can see “light and shadow” in the contract. The relaxation of the debt brake for defense purposes, the special fund for investments and the measures to strengthen the economy, however, emphasized it as a good basis for working between the Union and the SPD. “I assume and hope that we will get good approval.”
