Canada’s new prime minister has apparently convinced the voters: The Liberal party was able to prevail against the conservatives – because of Donald Trump.
The party leader of the Conservatives in Canada, Pierre Poilievre, admitted his defeat in the parliamentary election and congratulated the incumbent Prime Minister Mark Carney on the election victory. The conservative party would “do its job and take the government responsible,” he said in a speech in the capital Ottawa.
According to forecasts, the Liberal Party of Mark Carney made a victory in the parliamentary election in Canada. As several Canadian media reported on Monday evening (local time), Carney’s liberal initial recruitments were in front of the conservatives.
Both the public broadcaster CBC and the CTV News broadcaster assumed on Monday evening that the Liberals would form the next Canadian government. However, it was not yet clear whether Carney’s party would also have a majority in parliament after counting all votes. In surveys, the liberals had actually been clearly behind the conservatives in surveys. Trump’s aggressive customs policy and his repeatedly expressed plan to make Canada the 51st state of the United States, but brought a spectacular change in opinion.
The official election result was still on Monday evening. For a majority of government, 172 of a total of 343 seats are necessary in the Canadian parliament. The Liberals had won the majority in 2015, but have been reigning with a minority government since 2019.
The Canadian election campaign was overlaid by the customs dispute, which Donald Trump had been in for, and Trump’s threats to make Canada the 51st state of the United States. On Monday, Trump reaffirmed his annexation plans for Canada on social media. This has triggered a wave of patriotism in Canada.
Canada’s prime minister was against Trump threats
The conservative candidate Pierre Poilievre then sentenced Washington’s interference. “President Trump, stay out of our choice,” said the opposition candidate in online service X to Trump. “Canada will always be proud, confident and independent and we will never be the 51st state.” Prime Minister Carney also spoke later and wrote at X: “This is Canada, and we decide what happens here.”

Carney had started the race with his liberal party as a favorite. He had emphasized in the election campaign that he was best qualified to deal with Trump due to his experience in dealing with economic issues. The chairman of the conservative party, Pierre Piilievre, had above all addressed the concerns of voters about the cost of living, crime and the housing crisis.
Carney, who has been ruling since mid -March, – party friend and successor to the long -time prime minister Justin Trudeau – aligned the election campaign entirely on Trump. The 60-year-old presented himself as the best candidate to accept the US President. He went to his predecessor Trudeau throughout the election campaign.
He was apparently able to convince many voters with his strategy. In warm spring weather, the Canadians stood in front of schools, community centers and other places in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto in line to give their voice. A record number of 7.3 million people had already made their vote in advance.
