The party of US President Trump wants to limit immigration and also expand tax cuts. Theoretically, their proposal could contribute to the former and help finance the latter.
The Republicans in the Justice Committee of the US House of Representatives want to request a fee of $ 1,000 to process their application from asylum seekers in the future.
These and other fees for migrants are part of a legislative proposal for the budget of the US government in the coming financial year, which the Republican members of the committee around the chairman Jim Jordan presented on Monday. The income should flow to the US authority for immigration and naturalization (USCIS).
Migrants who are taken up for humanitarian reasons should therefore also have to pay $ 1,000 with a few exceptions. To become a sponsor of an unaccompanied minor migrant should cost $ 3,500. For an application of a migrant to a work permit with half a year, $ 550 should be due.
Report: Fee would be new territory
According to a report by the “New York Times”, it would be the first time that the United States will collect a fee of asylum seekers. The fundamental right to seek asylum is anchored in international and US law.
First of all, according to the Republicans, the judicial committee of the House of Representatives will deal with the suggestions on Wednesday. The party of US President Donald Trump has a narrow majority in both parliamentary chambers.
A few weeks ago, the House of Representatives approved a budget that extended and expanded tax cuts from Trump’s first term (2017-2021). The financial year begins on October 1st.
Trump has illegally announced migrants several times. Since taking office in January, more than 200 Latin American migrants, whom the government accuses of being gang members, have been flown to Central American El Salvador in order to be imprisoned there.
Trump’s migration policy course also includes a drastic restriction of entry options for those seeking protection. The Trump government also targeted foreign students with legal residence status who protested against Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.
