Abortions are fundamentally illegal in Germany. There are exemptions. But the Federal Medical Association finds a basic problem and demands a reform.
The German Medical Day has spoken out to defuse the abortion rules in Germany. As the Federal Medical Association announced, a corresponding decision was made in Leipzig on Thursday. The “Deutsche Kärzteblatt” and the “Ärzte-Zeitung” had previously reported about it.
The interest association therefore advocates in a decision on a decision accepted by the assembly to regulate abortions in the first twelve weeks outside the criminal code. The obligation to advise for unwanted pregnant women should be maintained at the same time.
Strengthen care and legal certainty
“In our opinion, this contributes to strengthening the care of the unwanted pregnant women and the legal certainty of the doctors carried out by the demolition. Especially in the obligation to advise, there is a chance to protect the living life,” said the Federal Medical Association.
Such a step is currently not planned politically. Before the Bundestag election in February, the SPD and Greens had campaigned for it, but failed in the Bundestag because of the necessary majority. A draft of more than 300 MPs provided for the abortions to be broken down outside the Criminal Code up to the 12th week after conception.
Abortions fundamentally illegal – exceptional rules
In the Criminal Code paragraph 218 it is stated that abortions in Germany are generally illegal. By exception rules, they are punished without a pregnancy within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy if the woman got advised beforehand. Even if there are certain medical reasons or after rape, stops are possible without making themselves punishable.
In the existing regulation, opponents see a criminalization of the abortion. It creates obstacles to access to high -quality care, it was said in the corresponding draft law. Those who wanted to end pregnancy would be stigmatized as well as providers of corresponding health services and helpers.
