The IOC after the Games increases its turnover to US $ 4,000 M

The billing was boosted by the income item obtained from audiovisual rights for the Tokyo Games, which represent 75% of its turnover, while 20% of the billing is obtained through the sponsors thanks to the TOP program, and 90% of the income was redistributed between the athletes, the Olympic movement and the committees.

In the Olympic cycle from 2017 to 2021, 61% of revenues have been obtained from broadcast rights and 30% from sponsorship programs. The rest come, on the one hand, from what the IOC calls other income that comes from the broadcasts of the Paralympic Games and other entities of the organization and, on the other hand, from what is obtained from the commercial exploitation of the different marketing programs of the Organizing Committees of the Games (Ocog).

Specifically, the revenue item for television is driven by America with 50% of total revenue, with 1,563 million dollars.

Behind is the Asian continent, which concentrates 27% of the turnover for this item, while Europe accounts for almost 20% of the total.

The boost in income caused the International Olympic Committee to close the year in positive, with a profit of 888 million dollars. That year the body distributed almost 40 million dollars to 28 sports federations to compensate for the postponement of the Games.

The IOC’s business compared to the previous Olympic stage was growing.

Compared to 2016, audiovisual revenues increased by 8.3%, while sponsorship revenues doubled thanks to the signing of agreements with new partners, such as Airbnb or Alibaba. Other brands have also been included, such as Coca-Cola, P&G, Allianz, Bridgestone, Omega, Toyota, Visa, Intel or Samsung, to which Deloitte has joined in recent months. In terms of profitability, the IOC made more money in the year of Tokyo’20 than in Rio’16. Specifically, it increased its profits by 19.8%.

In total, the IOC distributed 2,059 million dollars to the rest of the committees, associations and international federations in 2021. 43.7% went to the organizing committee of Tokyo 2020, 26.2% to the international federations, 22, 5% to the national committees, 14.5% to the United States and 7.2% to the Olympic Movement.

The net debt of the sports organization was slightly reduced in this last year to 125 million dollars (118 million euros), which is 3.8% less than the 130 million dollars (123 million euros) of the previous year .

“These were unprecedented Olympic Games and it took an equally unprecedented effort from everyone in the Olympic movement to make them a reality – we can all be very pleased with the overwhelmingly positive global response to these Games,” IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement. a statement.
